- Day 1: Arrival at Casa del Suizo Lodge
On arrival at Quito airport, you'll be met by a Casa del Suizo representative who will check you in and brief you on your stay. You'll head to your lodge from the port of Tena, which is a 3 1/2-hour drive from Quito. When you arrive, you'll board a motorboat for a 30-minute trip up the Napo River to reach your lodge.
You'll be greeted with a welcome cocktail, and then have the option to go on a first activity with your guide or relax at the lodge for the rest of the day.
- Day 2: Amazoonico Nature Reserve & visit to the village ofAhuano
You'll leave early in the morning for a dugout canoe trip along the Napo River, where you can spot tropical birds and marvel at the Amazon rainforest's dense vegetation. You'll then head to the Amazoonico Nature Reserve which is across the river from your lodge and a refuge for wild animals most of which have been rescued from mistreatment. There's a wide range of animals including monkeys, tapirs, coatis, snakes and a variety of colourful birds.
After lunch, you'll visit the town of Ahuano, a Quechua village on the banks of the Napo River. You'll learn more about the Kichwa culture and a local will show you all about daily life in the village. They will show you how to make chicha, a traditional drink from the Ecuadorian Amazon, which you can then sample. You'll be introduced to the natural purification rituals commonly held in this village as well as a number of other rituals. Finally, you'll get to enjoy a blowpipe competition with the locals, the perfect way to take part in one of their favourite activities.
- Day 3: Raft making & butterfly watching at Mariposario
After breakfast, your guide will take you on a walk through the Amazon rainforest and show you different species of birds and insects. You'll get to see unique species of trees and medicinal plants that are still used today.
After this walk, you can try your hand at raft-making on the riverbank. Your guide will show you how to make your raft, and then it will be your turn to give it a try. You'll be able to climb onto your raft to test its strength before you return to your lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, you'll go to Mariposario, which is an hour's walk from the lodge. This is a butterfly farm, home to hundreds of butterflies of all colours where you can learn about their life cycles.
At the end of the day, you'll return to Quito by the same route as the outward journey: motorboat ride followed by car transfer from Tena to the airport. This return trip will give you a final opportunity to spot the Amazon's birds and animals.
- Note for days 4 and 5:
For the fourth and fifth day, you'll have a choice of several activities to do with your guide during the day, whether it's Amazon rainforest walks, canoeing on the Napo River, discovering the local culture or enjoying other activities with locals from Ahuano; there's something for everyone, so you're sure to have an unforgettable stay.
